Gunshots To Google: Teaching Entrepreneurship To Chicago’s Inner City

On the 15th floor of a modern high-rise across from the Sears Tower in Chicago, talk turns to gunshot wounds. Seated at a conference table are seven high school students from nearby Chicago Tech Academy, brainstorming about health-related business ideas (treating diabetes, long waits in the ER and so on) with Terry Howerton, a local entrepreneur who cofounded the school in 2009. But the discussion quickly turns real. ?How many of you know someone who has been shot?? Howerton asks. Four kids raise their hands. Gangs are usually involved, they explain, but Michelle, an extroverted junior, offers this variation: Her best friend, a 16-year-old boy who died after being shot in the chest last year, wasn?t the victim of gang rivalry. ?It was over a hat,? she says.
