Over the past couple of weeks I have said this week would keep me distracted from my business of finding people with disabilities jobs through my new company, Opportunity Works. I was not kidding. Let me start by explaining something that many people don’t understand. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is the nation’s oldest child advocacy organization. People believe the PTA is about bake sales and fund raising for school, but all that’s really secondary. We fund raise only to help the children in our community in education, health and overall well-being. I am honored to serve my county (Pinellas) council PTA as the vice president of advocacy. Each year we have events with our state’s elected officials at our schools, during elections we host a school board candidates’ forum and each year we track too many state bills to count AND we go to Tallahassee during session to make sure we’re not forgotten. My focus this week was to meet with as many state legislators as possible at the Capitol, to make sure they were on board with the PTA’s top priorities.
